Belmopan, (WBWTN) - The Belize National Teachers' Union (BNTU) has announced it will carry out Phase One of its approved industrial action. A nationwide demonstration this Friday, May 9. This marks the beginning of a firm stand by the union as it demands meaningful action from the Government of Belize (GOB).
The BNTU is pressing for a number of urgent changes, such as:
- Raising the minimum wage from $5 to $6,
- A minimum salary adjustment of 8.5% for public officers,
- And the reinstatement of remaining salary increments that were frozen in previous years.
The union has stated that excuses about affordability will no longer be accepted. They’ve called out the GOB for awarding salary increases to CEOs while frontline public servants continue to struggle with stagnant pay and the rising cost of living.
Among public officers, teachers have been the most vocal and organized. While others share similar concerns, the BNTU consistently takes the lead. As the saying goes, “Teachers have our back,” and many Belizeans are now looking to them to spearhead real change.
Still, the BNTU emphasizes that this fight is not theirs alone. Teachers are standing up for all public servants, even those who may not take to the streets. As they prepare to go up against what many describe as “the mighty dragons,” some will march beside them, while others may simply watch.
At the heart of this action is a vital truth: teachers are essential. Without them, schools don’t function, and our children lose out. Educating youth from all walks of life is no easy task, and this demonstration is not just about dollars and cents it’s about respect, recognition, and fairness for those who shape the future of the nation.
