Belmopan, Belize (WBWTN) – A State of Public Emergency has been declared in parts of Belize City, the Belize District, and the Cayo District, following a proclamation issued by Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam. The measure, published under Statutory Instrument No. 67 of 2025, takes effect immediately.
The decision was made due to what officials describe as imminent threats to public safety related to organized violence or unrest.
Areas Covered by the Declaration
The emergency order applies to the following areas:
Belize City and Belize District:
- Areas enclosed by major landmarks such as the George Price Highway, the Belize River, Central American Boulevard, and the Fabers Road vicinity
- Lake Independence Boulevard
- Queen Street, Handyside Street, and North Front Street
- Ladyville Village (between Mile 8 and Mile 13 on the Phillip Goldson Highway)
- West Lake Community (between Mile 7 and Mile 9 on the George Price Highway)
Cayo District:
Entire villages of:
- Hattieville
- Roaring Creek, including the "Another World Area"
- Young Bank Area in Camalote Village
What the Emergency Powers Allow
Under Section 18 of the Belize Constitution, this State of Emergency will initially last for one month, but can be extended by the National Assembly for up to 12 months at a time.
Under the emergency order, the government is allowed to:
- Establish curfews
- Set up checkpoints
- Restrict movement
- Increase police and military presence
Government’s Position
The Governor-General stated that the action is “targeted and necessary to protect lives and property.” Residents in the affected zones are advised to follow official instructions and stay updated through trusted news sources.
Although the declaration does not mention specific incidents, the use of emergency powers suggests the government is responding to serious concerns about safety in the listed areas.
