(WBWTN) – A quiet Saturday night in Punta Gorda was disrupted by gunfire after a 37-year-old man was shot on Prince Street by a lone gunman dressed in a blue hoodie.
Police received reports of the incident around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 19th 2025 and responded to the scene. However, by the time officers arrived, the victim, identified as Derek Hines of Prince Street, had already been transported to the Punta Gorda Hospital.
Hines was later transferred to the Western Regional Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for a single gunshot wound to the right side of his neck. His condition is listed as stable.
Investigators say Hines was standing alone when he was approached by a man wearing a blue long-sleeve jacket with a hoodie. The assailant reportedly pulled out a firearm and fired one shot before fleeing the area.
Police have since detained one person for questioning as investigations continue into the incident.
