Belize City (WBWTN) – What started as a regular Thursday night patrol turned into a life-saving mission for two officers in Backatown.
Around 10:15 p.m. on April 24, Alfred Cunningham and Maleek Wright were driving along Sittee Street when something caught their attention. A group of people had gathered by the canal, phones out, watching something unfold in the water.
The officers stopped to see what was going on—and found a dog fighting to stay above water. Tired and scared, the animal was slowly slipping under. The crowd stood by, recording, but no one moved to help.
That’s when Cunningham and Wright stepped in. Without wasting a second, they grabbed a rope from their vehicle and headed to the canal's edge. Working together, they pulled the dog out of the water.
The dog, soaked and shaken, was alive.
Cunningham, who breeds dogs in his spare time, later said, “Couldn’t watch him drown, so me and my partner got him out and he’s okay now.”
Their quiet act of bravery didn’t go unnoticed. While the dog may never be able to say thanks, Backatown has a reason to feel proud—two officers who didn’t look the other way.
